FORMATION DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

How would you have the Eucharist taste?

You nourished your people with food of angels *
and furnished them bread from heaven, ready to hand, untoiled-for, endowed with all delights *
and conforming to every taste.

For this substance of yours *
revealed your sweetness toward your children, and serving the desire of him who received it, *
was blended to whatever flavor each one wished.

That your sons whom you loved might learn, O Lord, *
that it is not the various kinds of fruits that nourish man, but it is your word that preserves those who believe you! *
For great are your judgments, and hardly to be described.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

We, too, with our own eyes, see only bread and wine, but we must see further and firmly believe that this is his most holy Body and Blood, living and true.

Francis of Assisi – The Admonitions - #1 – Of the Lord’s Body

Have you ever noticed that different people like different foods? Perhaps, the same food even tastes differently to different people. The canticle from Wisdom, which the Church uses to help us understand the Eucharist assures us that the Sacrament is “endowed with all delights and conforming to every taste.”

How does the Eucharist taste to you? Is it, perhaps, tasteless, like stiff cardboard? How would you have him taste? This is the sacrament which is “endowed with all delights” and contains “within itself all sweetness.” It conforms “to every taste.” Let us work always to increase our faith in the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. We are all now considering our own Franciscan Ways. Let’s reflect on work we have done over the last two years and see where the Body of Christ fits into it. May we always taste the full sweetness the sacrament contains.

Peace!

Tom
