Duties of the Spiritual Assistant

The Council

ROLE OF SPIRITUAL ASSISTANT

The spiritual assistant is an important member of the council on fraternities of every level. He/she is called a “vital bond” and a “visible link” between the Franciscan families and the Secular Franciscans. As a friar he has the expertise to present the Franciscan charism in depth and to uphold the traditions of the Order; as a member of the council he/she has the wisdom to offer safeguards in interpreting the Franciscan spirit.

  1. The spiritual assistant is the liturgical leader of the fraternity by providing opportunities for the celebration of the eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours.
  2. He/she directs the minds and hearts of members toward God as the principal source of the fraternity’s life and growth. The spiritual assistant whose life in brotherhood is an essential ingredient of his vocation, is an important motivator in leading the Seculars to live and work in harmony as members of one Franciscan family.
  3. Among the characteristics of Franciscan spirituality, fellowship as well as witness and service in the world are highlighted as very special . And the spiritual assistant is singled out as one who is to assist the Seculars in acquiring these characteristics.
  4. The spiritual assistant is an important channel whereby Seculars, in imitation of St. Francis are motivated, inspired and roused to radiate gospel values in a world that ignores, despises and berates such values.
  5. The spiritual assistant participates in interviewing the candidates before they are professed to the Order.
